Your Opinion on Property Taxes

We welcome your opinion on property taxes.

The plan includes the following benefits for Florida taxpayers:

-Portability, allowing homeowners to transfer their Save Our Homes benefit (up to $500,000) to a new homestead.

-Doubles the homestead exemption, allowing an additional $25,000 for the value of homestead property above $50,000. This exemption will not affect school taxes.

-Grants a new $25,000 exemption for tangible personal property.
Requires an annual appropriation to fiscally constrained counties to make up for revenue reductions.

-Limits the annual growth of assessed value for non-homesteaded residential and business properties to 10%. For most non-homesteaded housing properties, this accumulated assessment limitation will expire at change of ownership.

Followed your input on this matter and have been heartened to see and hear that you feel these decisions are up to the voting public. Let us hope that they see that in order to have a successful end to this problem...the first step must be taken...to get out and vote in favor!!!

Your 9/27 post is a real cop out for legislators. what a ridiculous proposal: giving the voters increased tax benefits in order to become re-elected contributes to increased unfairness in the property tax laws with resulting increased adverse impact on Florida real estate and and Florida's economy. Legislators who favor the kindof legislation you are apparently supporting should be voted out of office. This legislation begs for litigation which will create chaos ... all for the vote. I say ... baloney!

Have listened to you at various property tax explanation events and when on TV interview shows. Well said.
Perhaps folks should look at the proposed amendment as a glass half full as opposed to a glass half empty. Any amount of money that I do not need to pay for unnecessary taxes is more money for me and my family to spend our way.

Have read the text of the amendment (not the ballot summary) and am concerned about SECTION 4, paragraph (c), wherein it is stated, "All persons entitled to a homestead exemption under Section 6 of this Article shall have their homestead assessed at just vallue as of January 1 of the year following the effective date of this amendment." Does that mean that all of our homestead properties will then be assessed based on the just value, which is defined as being market value? If so, that effectively denies us all of the Save Our Homes benefit! The portability feature is essentially pointless. A re-assessment at market value will have the same effect as selling our homes and buying them back at today's market value. Please clarify this and make sure that the voting public understands what they are voting for.

Home ownership in Florida is in danger because of property taxes and insurance cost. It's just too expensive for middle America. Renting is a lot more affordable ATM.

I understand that you are co-chairman of Huckabee's Florida campaign and I also understand that the campaign will be opening an office in Orlando next week. Contact me please and tell me how I can get involved:

True property tax reform is in the bill Mitch Needleman proposed. Everything else is still preventing true home ownership. How can a government be able to take a home away from someone if they are unable to pay taxes to a government that is not responsible for being a good steward of the money? This is suppressive governing.

Hi Mike,

Glad to hear you made something of yourself!

Now that I am a business owner (80 employees) and my folks live in Florida, I'll have to put some pressure on you to cut our taxes.

Hope to see you at the GC 20th reunion.

Cheers,

Craig Hordlow

My partner and I have two primary residences, one that is 5 years old and the other 10. We already pay too much tax without the same benefits as married couples with children- marriage and having children is a right denied to us. I encourage property tax reduction through reduced benefits and government spending. We all need to be accountable for our existing debt and do with less.
